The Secure Site UK ladies embarked on their 13.1 mile walk on Saturday 24th June. Joined by over 800 other walkers, the girls braved the unfavourable weather conditions to raise money for St Barnabas House’s hospice services.
Throughout the day, the weather was unsettled with gusty winds and unpredictable showers. Luckily, by the time the walkers met at Worthing Leisure Centre, the winds began to ease – it would seem the weather was going to be on our side.
There was a gentle excitable hum that filled the centre, as people were having their faces painted, signing in or buying the ever-popular flashing bunny ears! Once the warm up had taken place, we were led onto the running track and up towards the start line.
A bang of confetti soaring up into the night sky signalled the beginning of the walk, and a sea of flashing pink lights could be seen pacing through the town and along the seafront.
There was plenty of encouragement along the way from the Worthing Mini Club, gymnasts and unexpectantly…Mr Blobby! The bananas, water and Twix bars were also very welcome along the route!
By the time we reached the last few miles, fatigue was starting to set in. Hips, feet and legs were starting to ache as the sun rose, but we weren’t going to give up now!
Once we crossed the finished line we all felt very deserving of our medals and even more, our bacon sandwiches! We all thoroughly enjoyed the walk, and hope to take part in it again next year. A massive ‘thank you’ to all those who sponsored us, and if you haven’t yet, there is still time by following this link.
